Best of the Worst Novel Openers

No agent news this past week, but San Jose State University announced the winner of the 2010 Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Writing Contest on 6/30/10. You won't find good writing in this contest! What you will find is the best of the worst first line in fiction. The contest has been around since the early '80's and is great fun! Here's this year's winning opener (sucking, kisses and gerbils, oh my!):

"For the first month of Ricardo and Felicity's affair, they greeted one another at every stolen rendezvous with a kiss--a lengthy, ravenous kiss, Ricardo lapping and sucking at Felicity's mouth as if she were a giant cage-mounted water bottle and he were the world's thirstiest gerbil."

It's nice to meet you, Erin. I found your website & blog from Absolute Write and was curious if you've heard anything from Anne Bohner @ Pen and Ink? I, too, have a partial out w/ her for my realistic YA novel, and am curious to her response time. Best of luck in finding a home for your novel. It sounds really interesting!:)
